Councillor

Jan Wilson is the former leader of Sheffield City Council, which governs a once industrial city of half a million people in the north of England. She was elected leader by the majority Labour group on the council in spring 1998, but was deposed by the opposition Liberal Democrats in 1999. She maintains the job is too important to get diverted into slanging matches with other councillors. "I get impatient with people having to posture and go through ludicrous confrontations," she says. "When you've had small children to deal with, you just can't be bothered with it."
